Carnegie Museum of Natural History (owls)

Tomorrow we will be having our first virtual field trip to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History to study owls. After downloading the information from the museum, I divided it into smaller sections for kids. Topics included Myths and Legends, and About Owls parts 1 and 2. I have invited the 3rd grade TAG students to share the experience with my 5th grade class. Today, we practiced connecting to another classroom in preparation for the trip. Unfortunately, we had technical difficulties and could not see the classroom on the other end, but we were able to practice procedures. For example, eight students will be asking questions and sharing what we know with the museum. Those kids had the opportunity to practice speaking and rotating into the preset chairs. Kids are excited about tomorrow’s trip. Hopefully, all will go well. As a culminating activity, students will be dissecting owl pellets and graphing results.

Tammy~

Looking forward to hearing the outcome of the Virtual Field Trip. You were right on the money to host the practice session prior to having the actual field trip. I always say, that the IVC event is not a the place to troubleshoot problems. That's why practice sessions play such an important role. They also give the students an opportunity to warm to the process.

Are you going to have an evaluation session with the kids after the field trip?

I'm so impressed with your work.

Best,
Camille

Camille,

I didn't have an evaluation session with the kids. The follow-up activity included dissecting owl pellets, analyzing and graphing the data. Many kids made comments about how much they enjoyed the field trip and were eager to dissect pellets. Last year my kids dissected owl pellets, and I observed that this year's class had a far better understanding and appreciation of owls - thanks to the virtual field trip to the museum.

Great idea about the preset chairs...will try that! We also have not been able to successfully link for we can't get a video stream into our classroom due to technical problems...hopefully soon? But will practice your idea with our visitation to Kerry Cushings classroom.

We are having a class to class discussion about entering 6th grade next year. The 6th graders wrote questions they had about Fleming and my 8th graders will be responding to them. We had to practice A LOT on how to answer thoughtfully, and respectfully so that 6th graders received correct information and not ridiculous answers...Fun way to allow 8th graders to talk directly to 6th graders.
